Teaching Addition Strategies: Goodbye Standard Algorithm

If you’re a 1st or 2nd grade teacher, you should definitely be saying SEE YA LATER to the standard algorithm.

Listen, I’m not saying you can’t show it to your students. But I AM saying we’re doing our students a disservice if we’re not helping them develop deeper STRATEGIES for addition.

I don’t know about you, but when I’m adding numbers mentally, I very rarely visualize the standard algorithm in my head. It’s honestly more complicated that way!

If you want to help your students develop strategies that include decomposing numbers, number lines, and so much more, this email series is for you.

The Free Email Series

There’s SO much I want to share with you, so I created a completely free email series. In it, I’ll take you step-by-step how to help your students develop these addition strategies.

Plus, everything I share with you is TRIED AND TRUE. I used all of these strategies, ideas, and mini-lessons in my second grade classroom. I’m sharing with you teaching tips that I found truly effective, and I know you will too!

In this 3-day email series, you’ll learn how to:

  • facilitate number talks
  • write effective math mini-lessons
  • record student thinking

If you need centers, task cards, worksheets, and printables that you can use right away, you can find some awesome resources right here.
